Why CUET UG is important: everything about CUET UG 2025

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)is a significant test in India, playing a crucial role in university admissions. CUET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admissions to undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and doctorate programs in Central Universities and other participating institutions across India.

CUET aligns with NEP vision for providing a common platform for university admissions. It seeks to eliminate the disparities created during university admissions due to various boards. NEP(new education policy) 2020 aims to transform India’s education, fostering holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary learning. It emphasizes skill development, equity, and technology integration, restructuring education from early childhood to higher education. CUET aligns with NEP by providing a common platform for university entrance. It has 37 subjects(13 languages+23 domain specific subjects+1 general test) the syllabus for domain-specific subjects are as per NCERT.


Eligibility

There is no age limit for candidates. After 12th boards, they are eligible for the examination.

Nation-wide scope

CUET has a nation wide scope of career and growth. It aligns every student aiming for university admissions after their 12th at a common platform. It includes central universities, state Universities and private universities as well. The list of CUET universities are a subject of change.

Inclusion of streams

The exam aims to include all the streams, that is, science, commerce and arts on a common platform for universities entrance.

Conduction of exam

The exam is conducted in a CBT(computer based technology). Students are thus advised to practice accordingly.

Structure of exam

The exam is divided into 3 sections:-

  • language test
  • Domain-specific subjects
  • General test

NTA offers 23 domain specific subjects. Maximum marks for each Domain-specific subjects are 250 marks. Each correct answer is awarded 5 marks and with negative marking scheme, 1 marks out of the marks awarded for the correct marked answers will be duleducted. The eligibility criterias of different universities for different courses are different. You are required to select the no. of subjects according to the university or course you are aiming for. Though, commonly 3-4 subjects are chosen by students. There is no limit for domain-specific subjects but there is a limit to number of subjects chosen along with language, that is 5. You need to attempt 50 questions. The duration of the examination will be 60 minutes.

Language test

There are 13 languages to choose from. There is one language you are required to choose among all the given languages. The maximum marks here as well, is 250 with negative marking. But there is a maximum limit for no. Of subjects, that is 5, and it includes language. You need to attempt 50 questions.

List of 13 languages are Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

General Test

It is not compulsory. You can choose according to the university you are aiming for and if they have included GT as a criteria for entrance or not.

Note:- it is compulsory to choose a maximum of 5 subjects(domain+language) and a minimum of 3 domain-specific subjects and 1 language.

Marking scheme

  1. 1. There will be 5 marks for each correct answer.
  2. 2. -1 for each incorrect answer.
  3. 3. 0 for the unattempted question.
  4. 4. Maximum marks will be 250 in each subjects.
