Hitting-a-nerve? Take A Look At A Honest Review On Adolescence

Recently, Adolescence has been trending on Netflix as a gut wrenching, edge-of-the-seat Thriller that has everybody drooling over the cast and production but what really lies behind all the glory ? Let me share with you my honest opinion.

An overview :

The series begins with the arrest of a 13 year old boy , Jamie Miller , as suspect of murdering his classmate . The story then unfolds through a web of investigation, family struggles and peer pressure on young boys .

Let’s cut little more deeper!

The major problem lies on the fact that the female classmate who died or was murdered, There was no real story behind who she was or any sort of information about the girl Katie leonard . The focus is solely on the boy , Jamie and his troubles as a juvenile arrested for murder . In the beginning we sympathize with the boy as he is shown as innocent and his whole façade shows that he was just being wronged but the moment we see him stabbing the classmate with a knife , for a 13 year old to commit such a horrific act on rage is a reflection of violent school shootings and stabbing in the UK schools , to which authorities have turned their eyes blind to .

Why did he do it ?

When the counselor interrogates him , the young boy shows his true colors , standing tall over her and yelling aggressively at her , while also justifying his actions which were solely based on the whole ‘ incel thing’ . The showmakers definitely did a great job at showing the old stereotypes and how young boys are mentored into a toxic lifestyle .

Here’s my whole take on the ‘incel theory’ , It’s said that 80 percent of women are attracted to 20 percent men and hence girls and boys once again go back to being rivals by mocking each other online through social media posts . The whole Andrew Tate philosophy is wrong in my opinion and shouldn’t be taught to kids especially young boys , I mean women have preferences for sure just like men do but most of the time , they start liking men or boys based on how they are treated by them , where they are appreciated and valued and same goes for women too , when the idea that gender roles act certain way goes around , women also start acting different . Jamie is no different. His pure hatred for Katie originated from her rejection , he believes he is not good-looking enough for her and hence channels that deep hatred of his own insecurities towards his loathful attitude towards women in general . It is also evident when he tells the counselor that “You don’t know , you are dead pretty” , when a girl is pretty she doesn’t have to worry about anything else especially not being liked back but when a boy is called guy , he feels he is rejected by many girls and he channels this hatred towards a toxic masculinity where the only way to satisfy their ego is to either shut the girl up for good , in this case it led to murder or simply bring them down emotionally .

It is also scary to think that everybody likes to blame the parents when their kid does something wrong but think about it .  when we become parents , we already have the responsibility to raise them up good , creating role models of them but yet all those times when we think they are on their mobiles playing video games , they might actually be watching porn or in the dark web . It is also scary to imagine that when we send our kids to school, we expect them to learn certain values that will later shape them but the things they learn at school and the influence of fellow classmates and peer pressure becomes one of the major reasons of behavioral changes .

In the last episode , the series shows the agony faced by the parents , especially the dad who blindly believed his son was innocent and now after have to deal with the real world where he is judged , targeted and painted a ‘ Murderer’s father ‘ . The ending is an emotional rollercoaster where the parents discuss what they did wrong but I wonder where did we as a society go wrong?
